Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
